Cystoscopy Information

Interstitial Cystitis Bladder Pain Syndrome is a condition that affects the bladder epithelium and the Interstitial space below the bladder epithelium. Often the doctor has to look into the bladder and understand the changes that are happening within your bladder by a procedure called cystoscopy. This procedure is done under general anesthesia and does not involve any cutting or bleeding.

Procedure Details

In this procedure you will be made unconciousness with the help of general anesthesia and shifted into a lithotomy position.  A jelly will be inserted into the urinary pipe to lubricate it and then the cystoscope will be introduced. The urologist will examine your urinary pipe as well as all areas of the bladder. The efflux from the urinary orifices will also be examined.

The benefit of cystoscopy under general anesthesia is that your urologist may also perform hydrodistension that will not only help in disease diagnosis but also provide a temporary cure. It can help to diagnose other similar conditions as well.Image result for cystoscopy

After the Procedure

The total duration of the procedure is 15-20 minutes. You will regain concisousness shortly after the procedure and you will most likely be sent home after 2-4 hours of the procedure. After the cystoscopy a short course of antibiotics is also recommended to prevent any hospital acquired and procedure related infections. You will be called subsequently for a follow up to understand the effects of the scopy and to discuss reports if a biopsy has been taken.
